Ethyl mercaptan is an important pesticide intermediate for the production of pesticides such as clethodim, rimsulfuron, sulfosulfuron and phorate. It can also be used to produce antimicrobial agent 401. When the air contains ethanethiol at a concentration of only 50 parts per billion, its odor can be perceived. Therefore, it can be used as warning agent of natural gas and petroleum gas and odor additive of reagents (the odor is at a concentration of 0.00019 mg/L can be smelled).
